Now, we know what you’re thinking: you want to put needles where?!
Don’t worry, we’re not necessarily sticking needles anywhere uncomfortable!
Many times we find that people suffering with pelvic pain, back pain, and hip pain have tight muscles in other places causing referred pain to these areas.
Dry needling is well-known as a safe, quick, and effective way to release tight and sore muscles and many times helps our pelvic and pregnancy patients.
The muscle chosen for the needle insertion will depend on which muscle function we are trying to target and improve. And no, we’re not going “right up in there” with the needle.
There are ways to access the muscles from “the outside in”. We can get you relief by targeting muscles surrounding the pelvic floor, such as the lower back, glutes, hips, abs, and inner thighs.
What Is Dry Needling?
- Dry needling (also known as trigger point therapy) is a proven treatment method that involves inserting small sterile needles into tight and painful areas of the muscle.
- This helps the muscles “reset” to their original state before they are affected by pain or injury.
- It can help you recover even quicker from painful conditions when used to enhance physiotherapy treatment.

Dry Needling FAQ:
- Does it hurt?
Most people describe a dull ache with the occasional sharp pain during the insertion, which only lasts 2-3 seconds. After treatment, you may or may not experience soreness that feels similar to when you’ve completed a hard workout. - Is it safe?
There are no risks with dry needling that aren’t mitigated with safety precautions and a certified physiotherapist. Richa is Functional Dry Needling certified and has an additional specialty for the pelvic floor. - Is it only for treating pain?
While dry needling can offer fast pain relief, it can also improve the movement and function of the treated area of muscles. Combined with prescribed exercises from your physiotherapist, dry needling can improve all of your muscle problems. - Who shouldn’t get this treatment?
Immunocompromised individuals, people with uncontrolled anticoagulants, or anyone with a local infection or active tumor near the painful area that needs to be treated.
If you have an autoimmune disorder, are pregnant, have diminished mental capacity, or have recent surgery, then you should talk to a physiotherapist to weigh the benefits of dry needling for your situation. - What’s the difference between dry needling and acupuncture?
Dry needling and acupuncture usually use the same size needles. During dry needling, the needles are stuck directly into the muscle knot or trigger point. In acupuncture, the needles are stuck along certain lines called “Meridians” and may not go into the sore muscles.
